I make spin tops for joy.
The joy of turning too-small scraps of wood into jewel-like objects that make people smile. The joy of watching the hesitation before someone gives one a spin.

They seem to belong everywhere—on desks, kitchen counters, bars, and coffee tables. Spin tops carry a long history and a world of shapes: the lower and heavier the rim, the longer they spin; the steeper the cone, the more they wobble. I like a bit of wobble, so I make mine with steep cones and watch them dance.

The small ones are easier to spin, the larger ones harder to turn.

They only balance when they move—and so do we, I once thought, sitting in a park.

The more of them, the more smiles. They’re the perfect gift, for anyone, of any age, on any day.
