ELLEN.SVENNINGSEN. copy https://svenningsen.co.uk/about ABOUT &nbsp; Working from my workshop in St Leonards-on-Sea, I create furniture, vessels and sculptural objects from carefully sourced wood. My practice is rooted in a fascination with the material itself and an ongoing exploration of how form, proportion and construction shape an object's presence. Born in Copenhagen, I moved to London to pursue an interest in scenic design. After several years working as a set design assistant, I developed a desire to better understand how things were made and went on to train in traditional joinery and furniture making at the Building Crafts College. This marked a turning point. I never returned to set design; the objects themselves had become the centre of my story, and I had become their maker. My practice began with furniture, grounded in traditional techniques and an appreciation for construction, proportion and the precision of joinery. Over time, carving and turning opened up a more experimental way of working. Familiar forms began to change: spoons stretched into elongated figures, vessels took on unexpected shapes, and the process of making became as important as the initial idea. Today, my work moves between furniture and sculpture. While my furniture remains rooted in function and construction, my sculptural work allows me to explore form more freely, often starting with an object whose original purpose gradually disappears.
